DINAcon 2024 - Source code sovereignty: local alternatives for an independent digital future

The source code is the heart of every digital application and therefore its most important asset. Currently, we store this mainly with American providers, which limits local control and independence.

The source code is the heart of every digital application and therefore its most important asset. Currently, we store this mainly with American providers, which limits local control and independence.

In this presentation, we will address this problem and present possible solutions. Open, alternative options for storing and managing source code will be presented. Source code. It is the key to the algorithms, business processes, user interfaces and databases that shape our digital landscape. Without it, the world of bits and bytes would be an empty space.

Source code is not only an important component, but also the most valuable asset of any digital application. So far, we have mainly entrusted our valuable treasures to the hands of American providers, who dominate the digital world. But does it really have to be this way? Shouldn't we keep control of our own innovations and promote local alternatives?

In this talk, we will address these questions together. We will shed light on the issues behind the current situation and take a look at the promising, open alternatives that allow us to keep our digital treasures at home.
